Season Highlights
vs Elkland:Sayre's softball team played its long-awaited season opener Monday night and seemed to be in hurry to get a win, topping Elkland 6-3 in a game where the Redskins scored five runs in the first two innings. “It was a good outing for us,” said Sayre coach Dana Twigg. “We waited long enough, but it was worth the wait. The girls played well, played together as a group.” Sayre did most of its damage early, but was down 1-0 before getting to the plate on a single by Sarah Hoffman and an RBI single by Melissa Allen. Elkland actually had runners on first and third, but had the runner on first doubled off on a liner that was snared at short and relayed quickly to first. Getting the big double play seemed to get the Redskins' bats going. Kim Janosko got the ball rolling, so to speak, with a walk, the only base on balls allowed by Elkland pitcher Allen (against five strikeouts). Mackenzie Gay ripped a triple that brought Janosko home then scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Amanda Kyc, who reached first on the play. Jessica Kearns got on on a fielder's choice that erased Kyc, then scored from first on an Elkland error on a ball hit by Ronnie Hamblin. Elkland added an unearned run in the second but Sayre went up 5-2 in the bottom of the inning. Kate Schrader started the inning with a bunt single and scored on a triple by Colleen Wayman. With one out, Gay brought Wayman home on an RBI groundout. “We were making good contact, especially early,” said Twigg. “If have good offensive output, we could have a good year.” Each team added a run in the fourth to close out the scoring. Gay led Sayre with a triple and a single, two RBI, a run and a stolen base and Kyc added two singles in three at-bats with one RBI. Wayman had her triple, RBI and run in two at-bats, Janosko had two at-bats with a single, RBI and run and Schrader added a sacrifice bunt to her single and run scored. Colleen Craig was 1-for-3 and scored once, Hamblin had an RBI and Jessica Kearns chipped in with a run scored for the Redskins, 1-0 heading into Wednesday's home contest with Northern Tier League East foe Wyalusing. Christina Webster handled the pitching duties for Sayre, recording eight strikeouts against six walks and five hits. She allowed all three Elkland runs, but only one earned run.
