Season Highlights
vs Elkland:Sayre was scheduled to start the 2007 baseball season much earlier than Monday, but once the Redskins were finally able to take the field, the team made it worth the wait with a dramatic, come-from-behind 9-8, nine inning win over Elkland. If the Rams felt like they had the game in the bag heading into the bottom of the seventh, they had good reason - Elkland led 8-3 and Sayre's only chance was a big inning. Well, a funny thing happened to Elkland on the way to the win, as Sayre got that big inning and went on to steal that Rams' win away from them. Sayre's turnaround actually began in the top of the seventh, when James Kearns got two of his four strikeouts, allowed one single, then got out of the inning without damage. The Redskins offense took heart, then ripped the heart out of the Rams. Anthony Villanti started the big rally with a single and went to third on an Andy Podolinski double. Both runners then scored on a single by Kearns. Brian Osborn stepped to the plate and lost a ball over the fence to make it an 8-7 game. Colin Repasky reached on an error, stole second and later scored on Rich Villanti's RBI single. Villanti made it to third and was called out at home when he tried to score on a passed ball. Shaking off the disputed “out” call at the plate, Sayre started the ninth with Kearns working a walk. Brian Osborn sacrificed Kearns to second and Kearns scored the winning run on a Colin Repasky triple. Down 3-0, Sayre got close in the bottom of the third. Bruce Osborn doubled and scored on an Eric Secor double. Secor went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Anthony Villanti. That 3-2 edge didn't last long, though, as Elkland scored five times in the top of the fourth for an 8-2 lead. Repasky hit the first of his two tripled in the bottom of the fourth and scored on an RBI groundout by Rich Villanti to set up the late-innings drama. What may be most impressive about Sayre's game is that the Redskins only committed one error, and that was on a pickoff play. The defense played nearly flawless baseball other than that, which is not easy for a team that hasn't had a lot of time on its field. “We had outstanding fielding,” said Sayre coach Glenn Jarvis. “It was a good team effort.” Jarvis was also happy with his team's offensive output, which included 16 hits. “We started slow, but when we started connecting with the ball we hit it well,” said the coach. Jarvis said that there were some first-game jitters and his squad did make a couple of mental mistakes. He also may have been the only one in attendance to see the value in going extra innings on a frigid night. “It was nice to go the extra two innings and get more at bats,” said Jarvis. “I was pleased with the effort. We were in trouble, down 8-3, but the kids believed in themselves. It was a good win, a good way to start.” Rich Villanti went 3-for-4 in the win with two RBI and Repasky was 2-for-5 with two triples and the game-winning RBI in his first varsity start. Brian Osborn added a single to his two-run homer and Bruce Osborn, Podolinski and Anthony Villanti each had a single, a double and scored a run for Sayre with Villanti adding an RBI. Eric Secor had the one hit, a double, with an RBI and scored a run, Kearns had his two-run single and scored twice and Galen Briggs also had a single for the 1-0 Redskins Anthony Villanti started on the mound for Sayre and went 3-plus innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, nine hits and two walks, hit two batters and struck out three. Kearns finished the game to get the win, logging four strikeouts and allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks. Sayre hosts Wyalusing Wednesday in the squad's first Northern Tier League East game of the season.
